INTERESTING Y&R WORK

Posted by: Andrea Rebolledo | Comments (0)

I found this print ad campaign of Y&R (Mexico) that was made for a foundation of children who burnt their face. The message is simple: don’t leave matches around children. I really liked this ad print because in contrast to all the humanitarian work that I have seen from other agencies, doesn’t really deliver the message. This may be because the ad’s layout or content is so overwhelming that it fails to deliver the message, or it may be because it lacks content. I think that this ad campaign is efficient in that it is straightforward, talks directly to the consumer and has a visual that engages the audience but at the same time, is not overwhelming.

Bring Change 2 Mind

Posted by: Sarah | Comments (3)

“1 in 6 adults and almost 1 in 10 children suffer from a diagnosable mental illness. Yet, for many, the stigma associated with the illness, can be as great a challenge as the disease itself. This is where the misconceptions stop. This is where bias comes to an end. This is where we change lives. Because this is where we Bring Change 2 Mind” (BringChange2Mind.org)

The “Bring Change 2 Mind” Campaign

Headed by Glenn Close and three mental health organizations, this campaign’s goal is to remove the negative stigma and misconceptions associated with individuals suffering from mental illness.

Directed by Ron Howard, the first PSA features Glenn Close and her sister who suffers from bipolar disorder. As people walk through Grand Central Terminal, their shirts reveal what others fail to see at first glance, their mental illness. What makes this ad effective is not the label on the person suffering from a mental illness, but the person standing next to them. For instance, one man’s shirt says “Post traumatic stress disorder,” while the shirt on the person standing next to him says, “Battle buddy.”

This ad parallels our discussion on attitudes, specifically forming and changing these attitudes. The goal of this campaign is to change the stigma linked to individuals suffering from a mental illness. Since these attitudes are primarily built around negative cognitions or beliefs, the objective of the campaign is to inform the public about mental illness, thus stimulating more positive associations with these individuals.

I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of hearing every, single news reporter and politician (including our President) bemoan the state of the U.S. economy. They ring their hands and pat us on the head as they suggest the ONLY solution is for the government to jump in and save us. Yeah… whatever. Last I checked, we’re Americans–we have a long and distinguished heritage of saving ourselves.

What happened to leaders who inspire… who understand that we are the most resourceful and productive society in human history?? Where are their words of inspiration?

Guess Southwest Airlines, like me, got tired as waiting…

Thank you, Southwest Airlines, for reminding us who we are.

Levi  Strauss & Co just recently launched the “Give them hope Now” Campaign. This campaign is to raise money for the Hetrick-Martin Institue, which is a non profit organization that that supports the Harvey Milk High School. As you can imagine the Harvey Milk High School is dedicated to support and help gays, lesbians, transgenders, and bisexuals during there time of need. They like to think of themselves as a school that is there for them when their family isnt. When their family kicks them out of there houses and wont support them. The school provides after school support groups and support services. At first when i viewed the ad i was unclear of what the message was for…Here is one of the commercials… What are your thoughts can you tell what it is for?? Also with Levis supporting a messsage like this do you think that people that are againt gay marriage and are homophobic may stay away from a company like this and stay away from purchasing their products? they have gone about delivering this message in a very modern way Rob Toledo, senior account director, Razorfish, Seattle says “We’ve put together a very impactful social media outreach strategy. We’ll be reaching out to bloggers and like-minded organizations and people in the LGBT community,” Do you think they did this because this topic is more of a modern issue and traditionalist might not agree and therefor they figured they could reach more of there target market? or because it cost less to get the message out??

This is a really neat billboard ad from the Foundation for a Better Life. It shows surfer Bethany Hamilton “rising above” an obstacle to continue pursuing her passion for surfing. Not only is this ad inspiring, but it also symbolizes the values of hope, dedication, courage, and ambition.

Target promotes a new way of life

Posted by: Kirby Sander | Comments (0)

I know a lot of things that we have posted have been related to the economy but unfortunately it is top of mind right now and as I have stated in a previous post advertising is reflecting that.

Target never ceases to amaze me. I have always loved their commercials because they are clever and visually appealing. Not that target needs to do anything to get me in there because I am in there at least once or twice a week but I still enjoy watching.

This recent target ad is so clever and very reflective of the times.

The message it presents is since we are all hard pressed for money we reinvent the way we do things. We should come up with cheaper alternatives that are just as great. We do not have to feel down because we cannot do all of the things we used to do.

The ad presents a great message and promotes it’s cheaper alternative products for a new lifestyle and a new time.

Genius!

I saw this commercial earlier today, and it sure made me want to go register for this. For those of you who do not know, this breast cancer walk lasts for 3 days and 60 miles, and the volunteer walkers raise money and awareness to try to find the cure for breast cancer. At the walk, everyone is there for the same purpose: they believe in a world without breast cancer. I love the idea that so many people volunteer in many cities nationwide to help with this valid and wonderful cause, and I also think the advertisement preaches a valuable message: do something that matters. Women that have either personally suffered or no someone that has truly understand that the virtues of life become much more apparent in your life when in a time of need. If you look closely in the advertisement, women are holding up signs saying “optimism”, “love”, and “hope”. I think that the most remarkable line in this ad is saying that this walk is a “celebration of life”, what a positive and encouraging way to look at this dreadful disease. Let’s all join this cause!

*the word “article” is a link to the article I read that was discussing this topic. I wanted to make sure you all saw that because the blue is kind of faint and it is a really interesting article.

I recently read this article that was addressing the tough times that advertisers are having due to the current economic recession. This is a difficult time for advertisers because they are advertising to consumers that aren’t buying. So what do they do? They have to address people in a whole new way, in a way that encourages smarter spending and less consumption but includes the product they are trying to sell.

One of the examples used in the article is Allstate insurance. In their recent ad campaign they are encouraging people to get back to basics and that in these hard times people begin to focus on the small things in life and they tie in their product by saying that those things need to be protected which is where Allstate comes in. I have to admit this commercial made me feel very warm and fuzzy inside.

dream_in_color

Target has come out with a new campaign for Black History Month: “Dream in Color“.*  The television ads showcase the personal hardships and accomplishments of now famous and successful African American women.  The goal of the campaign is to inspire others to work hard and never give up on pursuing their dreams (similar to the stories about Tyler Perry and Michael Jordan seen in earlier posts on this site).  The four amazing women featured in the TV ads include Holly Robinson Peete, Bethann Hardison, Thelma Golden, and India.Arie.  These women speak to the issues of Legacy, Beauty, Education, and Community in several short video interviews posted on the site.

In addition to the ads showcasing these four women, Target has partnered with the Smithsonian Institution and Scholastic to provide free Black History Month lesson plans to teachers.

Throughout this campaign Target seeks to celebrate, educate, and inspire others, specifically within the context of diversity.  An extension of the “Dream in Color” campaign (which is intended to run for an entire year), also found on the website, includes video interviews with other successful artists, designers, and community leaders including John Legend, Emilio Estefan, and Sami Hayek.

All of the videos in this campaign emphasize ambition, believing in yourself, common ground, determination, encouragement, hard work, hope, inspiration, living your dreams, overcoming, perseverance, strength, etc, etc, etc… through the personal stories of these individuals.  Basically, they hit on a lot of the virtues we promote on this site.  I think the overarching theme here, and one we so desperately need to hear in these difficult times, is to take personal responsibility and LIVE YOUR DREAMS, a.k.a. “Dream in Color”.

*Unfortunately, I am not able to post the videos directly onto the blog because of Target’s restrictions.  However, all videos are available through the link above.
