“I’ll Be There” – State Farm

Posted by: Kat Farmer | Comments (5)

State Farm launched a great campaign this month in reflection of the season of thankfulness. Why not spend time thanking others for being there – State Farm offered a great way for consumers to do this, and it plays along really well with their tag line of “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.”  They really play well with relating their tag line to the consumers.

I believe this ad really adds relevance to the consumer, and the song choice is really important (especially in this particular video) – I’ll Be There by Jackson Five.

I think there are very few companies who can do this well – and I applaud State Farm for their efforts.  They are giving consumers the opportunity to send a thank you note to others thanking them to be there.  The commercial doesn’t focus on anything about State Farm, just on others doing good deeds, and then at the end it offers their tag line.  What is your input on companies utilizing holidays to help with their brand image?

Way to go, State Farm!

Liberty Mutual launched a commercial back in 2006 promoting responsibility – stranger to stranger.  Their commercial received so much attention that they decided to form “The Responsibilty Project” which according to their website “[they] thought, if one TV spot can get people thinking and talking about responsibility, imagine what could happen if [they] went a step further? So [they] created a series of short films, and this website, as an exploration of what it means to do the right thing.”

The video below is the first commercial they aired in 2006.

The website features over a dozen short films showcasing different ways that strangers are responsible to one another.  The videos are great short movies, and really eye catching.  They leave the individual really questioning his or her own actions.  This is a GREAT method to really engage the audience and encourage some type of action.  Though it’s not about the product it’s action to join the movement of responsibility.

I think it’s absolutely fantastic that Liberty Mutual saw a need for this movement and what a great way to bring recognition to their brand.  Furthermore, they are weaving the value of these movies (responsibility) with the value of their brand (responsibility).  I say way to go Liberty Mutual for really relating to the consumer.

This is a follow-up ad that ran on TV as well.

You can go to The Responsibility Project website and check out the the short films that were made.  What is really interesting is that NBC now has their additions to The Responsibilty Project and have added their own short clips with some if their starring actors are featured in the video.  Is NBC tagging along to this cause hoping to gain as much respect as Liberty Mutual has through their efforts?  I definitely applaud Liberty Mutual’s mission with this project, but I wonder if NBC is doing this because they see the opportunity for growth or if they truly are passionate about this subject.

Kudos to Liberty Mutual!

Also, for your viewing pleasure check out another Liberty Mutual website – What’s Your Policy.  It features tons more commercials focusing on The Responsibility Project.

This is a great, classic ad from Coca-Cola.  Joe Greene was just given his Clio award that was awarded back in 1979.

Their most recognized tagline for this commercial was – “Have a Coke and a smile!”

This is a great ad showing gratitude from Joe Greene to the young fan. Helping others is another virtue that is shown in this ad. I think this is a great advertisement showing responsible role models.  What if more companies showed virtues like this ad does?  Even though this ad is 30 years old today, it still shines an awesome light on Coca-Cola and what their company represents.

MTV Switch

Posted by: Kat Farmer | Comments (2)

I want to start with the little known fact that I’m not a MTV fan.  I haven’t turned on MTV since I was probably 16.  But I came across this commercial which then brought me to the MTV switch website.  I was blown away by the concept that a company that is generally known for is crazy tv shows, crude humor and much more was trying to educate their audience on what it means to “go green.”  Now, obviously the “go green” theme is a little over used, but MTV has shown their audience what problem is out there and allowed the opportunity for the consumers to elaborate on this process and find solutions.

They also have a blog that allows readers to “GET INVOLVED – and find out what YOU can do to help the environment and STAY INFORMED – on the latest trends and fashions that are keeping the Earth clean and keeping you classy”

With their use of great music and visual aspects in their videos and site, it really engages the audience which leads to an interest to seek more information.  I applaud MTVs efforts to reach out to the “unclean.”  What other audiences could be reached by the media they watch?

Is there another organization that could help responsibly promote how to live e-friendly?

Can we turn around the ad industry?

Posted by: Kat Farmer | Comments (8)

These past few months have been really eye opening for me. I’ve had the opportunity to be exposed to quality advertising, and advertising with a purpose. As much as I love to study advertising I’ve always been weary of most of the advertising campaigns that I’ve been exposed to, but through this website I’ve been able to see truth in advertising, not to mention quality, and goodness. These ads have shown me that there is a responsible side to the advertising world, but it’s just a matter of exposure to the rest of the world that you don’t have to use things such as sex to sell a product. You don’t have to have a misleading or dishonest ad to sell your product or service. Why can’t advertising be about bettering society or providing consumers with honest, helpful information? I hope efforts such as Advirtues.com can help provoke other people to respond positively to the advertising industry. Not to mention start a movement with other advertising agencies to jump on this bandwagon – because this is a good one to jump on! Do you think with efforts such as advirtues.com and adcouncil.com that the advertising industry can do a 36o* and truly change for the better? What other ways can the industry repair it’s ‘broken’ image?

Ready to hear the truth?

Truth

I found this on the ACT Responsible web page earlier today.  I think this is a really good way to grab people’s attention.  Definitely not the typically way people expect to see a message.  It’s definitely a strong message that many people need to hear!

This organization has such a great idea!  Why not use a concurrent distribution chain that is in existence to combat sickness in impoverish nations?  The founders of Colalife have a great idea.  Use this multi-national corporation to save ’ lives.  Visit www.colalife.org for more information!

FreeRiceI found out about this website this morning in a meeting with my hall director.  I’ve been kind of in a freaked out stage getting ready to take my GRE, and my hall director mentioned freerice.com to me.  It’s a website (see picture below) where you answer question after question and for each question you get right you donate 10 grains of rice to rid hunger!  Not only can you test your vocabulary skills but there are also subjects such as math, chemistry, world geography, Spanish, Italian, German and French.  This is a great tool for any one to use! Whether it actually be for study purposes or just for fun.

Freerice.com is utilizing customer engagement to help fight their cause.  They aren’t selling a product to anyone, just trying to spread the word about what freerice.com does and who they stand for.

FreeRice has two goals:

  1. Provide education to everyone for free.
  2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.

This is a great cause social media campaign!  What better way to use online WOM than to combat world hunger!

Help end world hunger

Igniting teens to give back

Posted by: Kat Farmer | Comments (2)

This is a great company that I came across earlier this morning.  Do Something is a company that is inspiring teens to get involoved in making a difference in different areas such as disaster relief, education, poverty, human rights, environmnet, etc.  This website not only gives consumers resources to find more information about these causes, but also how to give back.

This is just one of the campaigns that is involved with DoSomething.org, this particular campaign with  Aeropostaleis asking teens to donate their worn jeans when they come mto buy new jeans.  Last year they collected over 125,00 jeans.

This company (Do Something) also has different widgets you can add to your own website, blog, Facebook account or other online venues.  It’s a great way to spread the word about making an impact and giving back!

Coke Side of Life – Giving Back

Posted by: Kat Farmer | Comments (4)

I first thought this was a Grand Theft Auto commerical, and then I was surprised when it turned out to be a Coke commerical.  I really like the fact that they turned a concept from it’s negative connotation and basically showed that you can give back!  I like that Coke is using different ways to show virtues in their ads.  This ad is a great way to show that Coke is trying to instill the idea of making a difference in peoples lives by giving back.  Way to go Coke!

What do you think about Coke using the Grand Theft Auto idea for their ‘Coke Side of Life’ Giving Back commercial?
