Cyberbullying

By

It’s all interesting to see the causes that the Ad Council chooses to create spots for. This ad focuses on the issue of cyberbullying. Although cyberbullying is a relatively new form of harassment, it is a major issue that is not addressed near enough. Cyberbullying has even been related to an increase in suicides among 10-19 year olds.

I think this ad does a great job of showing us that internet bashing is just as painful as being insulted in person. I also really like how the little girl’s speech catches the viewer off guard. I’m not sure what I was expecting to hear come out of her mouth, but I was certainly not prepared to hear so many rude insults! The commercial cuts back and forth between the girl’s speech, and close ups of “Patty’s” face as she listens to what her peers think of her. Patty’s emotional transition from being flattered that she was the topic of interest, to embarrassed by what is actually said is pretty powerful, especially since she is so young.

I would imagine this was an effective campaign not only because of the well written script, but also because of the ad’s call to action… or anti-action at the end of the commercial when it tells people how to stop cyberbullying: don’t write it, don’t forward it, etc.

I actually remember seeing this ad! I think it is very effective, but mostly for adults who are already aware of how detrimental cyberbullying can be to young kids. I definitely doubt it is effective for actual kids that age, but it is really good/important to tell parents to inform their children about cyberbullying and make sure that they do not do it. It really is sad, and with the internet and social media being so popular these days, even among younger kids (middle schoolers are meeeean) it is so important to assure that cyber bullying does not get out of hand. I sure am glad facebook wasn’t around when i was in middle school because I feel like middle school girls are just out to get each other!

I agree, Kristina, this ad does seem to target an older audience. I think part of the problem with cyberbullying is that it is anonymous…or at least not easily traceable. Because of this it’s easy for children to think that it’s okay since they won’t get punished. This actually happened at my school when I was in seventh grade. A girl in my class had been sending out “prank” death threats to other girls thinking she wouldn’t get caught. She was wrong…they ended up finding out it was her and even had the police come get her. She was kicked out, and needless to say we didn’t have any more issues at my school
