Above the Influence

Posted by: | Comments (0)

I just saw a television ad for abovetheinfluence.com. The website has both television and print ads focused on helping people take a stance against drugs. They have a place to ask questions and connect with other teens and ask a doctor question. It seems the campaign attempts to drive people to site and to make poeople look at their current behaviors in new ways. See the print ad – “Wasp” where one wasp offers another some bug spray. Yuck!

Perception is reality… for some

Posted by: | Comments (6)

Eating disorders are perplexing to everyone. Even experts do not fully understand it, much less the friends and family of those with these diseases. This ad hopefully sheds some light on what sufferers experience… not just to those who stand by helplessly as they watch their loved ones wither away, but to the sufferers themselves.

The Coke Side of Life

Posted by: | Comments (1)

This is one of my favorite commercials. I love how coca cola took a notoriously violent video game like grand theft auto and turned it into something positive. I think its clever, and the words of the song send a really great message to the public. They took a video game about violence and destruction and changed it to promote kindness and giving back. I think associating your product with such an uplifting, and funny, message is definitely beneficial. I kind of want a coke now.

Ready to hear the truth?

Truth

I found this on the ACT Responsible web page earlier today.  I think this is a really good way to grab people’s attention.  Definitely not the typically way people expect to see a message.  It’s definitely a strong message that many people need to hear!

This is a really neat billboard ad from the Foundation for a Better Life. It shows surfer Bethany Hamilton “rising above” an obstacle to continue pursuing her passion for surfing. Not only is this ad inspiring, but it also symbolizes the values of hope, dedication, courage, and ambition.

… and we wonder why eating disorders are rising among American girls

I loved this commercial because it is so brutally honest. Online bullying occurs every where and the worst part is people can make up anything and everyone thinks its true. The same person can write mean thing after mean thing about you and since its online and anonymous the victim believes that it is coming from a lot of different people. One website that is well known for only talking bad about people is juicycampus.com. This commercial shows how comments on that website are just as mean as if you were saying them in person. This ad carries a positive message that we all should follow and with this blog starting i think it shows how we should respect everyones comments and only respond in ways that you would respond to them in person.

MADD Ads

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Drunk driving is something that has affected me in a person way, so it is something that I stand strongly against.  I think that MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) does a great job with their campaigns against driving drunk.  They are not afraid to shock people and make them cringe.  If MADD didn’t make people cringe at the sight f their ads, they wouldn’t be as effective.  Drunk driving is a serious problem among young people in this country today, and I think that ads from groups like MADD should be seen more.

Check out a few of the MADD ads:

Carnival Cruise lines has a new campaign, and with the tag “Fun For All.  All For Fun”, you know it’s going to be something interesting.

October 26th 2008, Dallas, TX: Carnival broke the existing record in the Guinness Book of World Records for creating the world’s largest beach ball.  Carnival released three of these giant beach balls in downtown Dallas, dropping them into the streets from high-rise buildings.  See the official commercial of the event below.

November 2nd 2008, Philadelphia, PA: Carnival made it into the Guiness Book of World Records for constructing the largest pinata EVER in downtown Philly.  See the official commercial below.

This campaign emphasizes two virtues I think we could all use a little more of: Common Ground and Laughter.  Find out how below…. Read More→

Warning: This video contains minor profanity

This YouTube video is basically a mockery of the lengths at which social media and social networking sites have infiltrated our lives, and to an extent have consumed all aspects of our daily lives and interactions with others. The video enlists characters of every different personality and shows them twittering about extremely random and often irrelevant subjects. Even at the end of the video when the character is facing his death, he says “hold on I need to twitter about this.” So while I agree that social media is extremely helpful at relaying positive messages in an effective way, at the same time it produces a negative side effect: people being consumed by technology and casting off normal human interaction. This relates to the whole idea of cell phone usage. I often find myself guilty of giving into the power of cell phones and texting. It is my belief that when you are with someone and they are constantly on their phone, texting, making calls in a sense they are saying that that phone and the person on the other end is more valuable than their time with you. It is offensive. Same thing with social media to an extent. When people abuse the powers of social media networks and become addicts it destroys the natural communication between humans. In fact page 113 of our Secrets of Social Media book discusses how “adults cringe at that kind of talk, believing that it confirms their suspicion that kids are forsaking meaningful person-to-person contact in favor of idle online chatter.” So as social media marketing students, what would you say is our responsibility to promoting a healthy amount of social media. Do you agree with the fact that social networking sites can go to far? Additionally, what are some ways or approaches that social media can encourage healthy usage?
